Welcome to Le Ségala.com based in the village of Cazillac
Le Ségala - Sleeps Up to 8
Gîte Diane - Sleeps2 to 4
Cazillac is set beautiful peaceful countryside, yet is close to all amenities, lots of places to visit and even more to do! Near both Martel and Les Quatre Routes du Lot in the northern part of the Lot – or Quercy – we are well served with good road links, airports and trains, making it an ideal destination for either a quiet break or a family-fun holiday.
We have two gîtes in Cazillac; one, Le Ségala, we own and the other, Gîte Diane, which we fully manage for French friends.
The gîte (French for holiday home) at Le Ségala ) is a former farmhouse and sleeps up to eight people in four double bedrooms, eash with its own shower-room and toilet. It has proved a success with many guests who have returned year on year.
The 7m round pool (1.5m deep), for your exclusive use, is cleaned and maintained by our pool man. It enjoys wonderful views across the valley and is fully fenced but also has an alarm system that conforms to EU regulations.
In the garden, there is a lawn on which you might enjoy a game of boule or badminton (sets provided) and a large gravelled area where the table and chairs sit beside the barbeque and under the shade of a lovely old oak tree . You also have a private parking area . There is a large walnut orchards as well as apples cherries and plums which you can pick when in season.
Inside the house you will find a beamed country kitchen/dining room with the original flagstone floor and stairs to the master bedroom. The door to the stairs still has the catflap – but no cats nowadays!
The kitchen has an oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, toaster and kettle, as well as some cookery books. The large round dining table seats eight and there is a high chair too! We provide some coffee, tea, sugar, salt, pepper, dried herbs and spices and olive oil, all of which we ask you to replenish as needed. And if you would like a pre-prepared light meal left in the fridge, or some basics, do let us know
In the separate 'four au pain' there is an additional fridge, the washing machine, iron and ironing board - there is a washing line in the garden. This room also stores the garden cushions, barbeque tools and garden games sets.
The living room is also beamed and has comfortable seating for all. A variety of games are provided and there is a television set on which to watch French tv, DVDs, and videos which we provide in several languages and for all ages. There is also a CD/radio/cassette player. A Wifi booster will connect you to the internet, so you can bring your own laptop.
There is one ground floor bedroom with a lovely French double bed, storage and views over the garden. It has its own separate shower room and toilet facilities.
Upstairs there are two further double bedded rooms with views to the south over the countryside. One, the master, is reached from the kitchen and the other from the living room. The master has its own dressing area and built in cupboard with chest of drawers as well as a shower room with toilet and basin. The other room has a wardrobe and a chest of drawers as well as its own shower room with toilet and basin. Both rooms retain the original beams.
Also reached from the living room is a bedroom with twin beds, hanging space and a chest of drawers, plus its own shower room with toilet and basin. It has views over the fields to the farms along the valley to the west.
A (travel) cot is available on request at the time of booking. In June, July and August, when the nights are warm, we make up the beds with sheets, a blanket and a bedcover – in earlier and later months, we also provide duvets. There are fans for hotter nights!
Les Quatre Routes du Lot is five minutes by car and has a choice of bakery, a supermarket, wine merchant, post office, newsagent, pharmacy and ATM machine. It has its own market on Wednesday and a mini one on Fridays. Bread can also be bought from one of two neighbouring farms as can the famous Rocamadour goat's cheese. Full banking services are available in either Martel or Vayrac.
Whilst we can arrange a simple meal for you on arrival, if you have a special anniversary or just want a meal ‘at home’, do let us know. We can then put you in touch with a wonderful caterer who speaks English and French, ran her own restaurant in Nottinghamshire and was featured in the Good Food and Michelin guides, so you can be sure of a delicious meal!
We are delighted to be able to offer another smaller gîte just five minutes from Le Ségala, so all the facilities and local area attractions are the same as our own!
This charming gîte sleeps from two to four people and is ideal for a relaxing stay. Situated on a quiet country lane and with wonderful views at every turn, this superbly built and traditionally furnished house has a large double height living room with an open fireplace, big kitchen/diner and generous bathroom on the ground floor. Upstairs is the large main bedroom which has a large double bed and drawers and hanging space. In the tower is a small office.
There is a separate outside barn with further sleeping accommodation for teenagers. Here there is a large single (approximately 4ft wide) on the ground level and a mezzanine sleeping platform with a futon. Those sleeping in the little barn will have to take a few steps across the garden to the house for the bathroom.
With a beautiful and large shade tree in the front garden and extensive grounds which slope down to a brook, there are several places to relax, eat al fresco or enjoy a barbeque.
The gîte has a Sunday change-over when guests arrive to a welcome bottle of wine awaiting them!
Our gîtes are near Martel in the northern Lot, south of Correze, east of Dordogne and west of Cantal!, so ideally situated for this unspoilt part of France.
The famous Dordogne river is nearby, meandering through beautiful cliff-hung gorges where you can rent a canoe and glide gently downstream, perhaps stopping off for a picnic on the riverbank and taking a swim. Elsewhere, both short and long walks are clearly marked to take in the magnificent scenery that first attracted your hosts to the area. Get out your binoculars and watch the buzzards and red kite soar above you, listen to our nightingale or watch the cirl buntings and hoopoes in the garden - in April and May search out the wild orchids of the Causse.
There are very few large towns and a smattering of small ones and all are almost totally unspoilt by modern development. Many of these towns have wonderful markets which brim over with foie gras, duck, meats, local sausages, fresh vegetables, strawberries and other fruits, local wines, and the cheeses and breads for which France is so famous. Sit in a café and watch the world go by – or shop in the centre of Brive which has some lovely shops in its narrow streets. There are wonderful restaurants from the Michelin starred (6 within three quarters' of a hour) to the simple workman's café.
No visit to this area is complete without seeing Rocamadour, France's second most visited site after Mont St Michel. This medieval village clings to the rocks above the Alzou valley. It has been a place of pilgrimage for more than 900 years and has a lovely abbey reached via a steep stairway which the very devout still climb on their knees. It is quite commercial and very busy during the tourist season, so visit either first thing or in the early evening when the sun goes down the whole village is lit up. There is a good choice of restaurants and cafes to suit most pockets. Once you have explored Rocamadour, then visit the birds of prey in L’Hopitalet - or the monkeys! The children will enjoy the dinosaur park and the goat farm nearby. A great day out for all ages.
Turenne, with the ruins of the Richard the Lionheart’s eleventh century chateau perched on a craggy pinnacle, is just ten minutes drive from Le Ségala and Gîte Diane. Nearby Curemonte boasts three chateaux dating from the Crusades and Collonges-la-Rouge is really a red sandstone village that gleams in the sunlight! Autoire, Loubressac and Carennac are not to be missed nor are the caves at Padirac or, further afield, at Lascaux and Peche Merle.
There is a tourist train from Martel which takes in the spectacular scenery of the Dordogne valley. Martel, the town of seven towers and marvellous architecture, just 6 kms from Le Ségala, is well worth a visit and full of restaurants and cafés. Or venture further afield to Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, Brive, Figeac, the ever-popular Sarlat, Domme, St Céré, the Célé Valley and St Cirq Lapopie - the list is endless.
Some of the activities, all within half an hour of Cazillac, include walking, rambling, waterpark fun, river swimming, canoeing, waterski-ing, trout fishing, golf, riding, cycling, pottery, painting and drawing..... or simply sitting and relaxing in a stress-free environment
